NRES 471 provides an introduction to soil genesis, classification, and morphology. Topics covered include the factors of soil formation, properties and methods used in distinguishing soils, organization of knowledge about soils, interpretation of soil profiles, soil stratigraphy, and soil landscapes, causes of soil variability and its impact upon soil management, land-use decisions, and the environment. Also included are applications of pedology to research. After taking the course, students will have a greater appreciation of the soil as a natural resource and will never again simply take it for granted. The course provides 3 graduate or undergraduate credit hours. Prerequisite: NRES 201 or consent of instructor. NRES 471 meets in S-509 Turner Hall, T & R 9:30-10:50 during Fall
semesters and is taught by Dr.
