Color Theory: (Sir Isaac Newton)

The Color Wheel:

- Red, Yellow, Blue

Secondary Colors: Formed by _____________________

- Orange , Green, Violet

Tertiary Colors: Formed by mixing primary and secondary colors

- Red-orange, blue-green, yellow-orange

Color Dimensions Hue : the name of a color

Warm Hues: -Informal colors

-

-

-For designs seen from the distance

cheerful, happy, cowardly, friendly, irritation

Design Tips:

-Allow adequate space for ___________ in a design; don't crowd, overpower

-Use ____________ for depth placements and to lend warmth and radiance

-Add small amounts of ____________ to a design to brighten and add “life”

Cool Hues: -Associated with cool mountain streams, ice & snow

-

Static Color

GREEN:

Characteristics: New growth, energizing, increases sense of well-being

- .

- Doesn't attract attention, blending

Emotions:

•  Quiet, restful, peaceful (Too much or too dark -- bad mood)

-

Design Tips:

- Combine _________ with brighter, warmer colors for visibility

- ___________ adds depth to a design in combination with warm colors

-___________ has a blending, softening effect on “clashing” colors. It is the best choice for a neutral container color

NEUTRAL HUES: white, gray, black

Tint: adding white

Light values are stimulating, advancing, light in weight, and seem larger than they are

Shade: adding black

Dark values are releasing, receding, heavy in weight, and seem smaller than they are

High visibility hues- yellow and related hues

Low visibility- violet and related hues

Tone: adding gray -- Reduces intensity

Strong color: high degree of intensity, light value, warm, highly visible

COLOR DIMENSIONS are relative. A flower of yellow hue may seem greenish-yellow if a reddish-yellow flower is placed next to it. Dark values appear darker and light values lighter when placed next to each other. A hue may appear brighter when a dull flower is placed next to it.

Color Schemes

RELATED COLOR SCHEMES

Example: pink snapdragons, light pink carnations, dark pink roses

-

-different values and intensities may be used

Example: darker yellow calendulas, orange marigolds, brown bowl

UNRELATED COLOR SCHEMES

ex. Red and green

~more of one hue should be used than the other.

~values and/or intensities of 2 hues should be different

ex. Yellow with blue-violet and red-violet

ex. Red, yellow, blue

~1 hue should dominate in quantity

~use smaller quantities of the other 2 hues

ex. White with red or blue

~4+ hues

~1 color should dominate, and the scheme should generally warm or cool

Color Force

High Visibility = _____________ hues + ____________ values (tints) + ____________ intensities

Low Visibility = _____________ hues + ____________ values (shades) + ___________ intensities
