Figuring Number of Plants to Use in a Design

Calculating Square Footage

Rectangular areas - multiply length times width

Triangular areas - multiply 1/2 the base times the height

Circular areas - mulitply 3.14 times the radius squared

Calculating Number of Plants Needed

To find out how many plants to buy, multiply the square footage by the "plants-per-square-foot factor" that corresponds to the plant's spacing:

Spacing
Plants-per-square-foot Factor
4 inches
9.0
6 inches
4.0
8 inches
2.3
10 inches
1.4
12 inches
1.0
15 inches
.65
18 inches
.45
20 inches
.25

For example, a five-square-foot bed of a plant that's spaced six inches apart would require 20 plants.
